With the holidays rapidly approaching, we're always trying to come up with gifts.
Do you make gifts for people? What do you make?
Any special suggestions for neighbors, teachers, co-workers, etc.? To me, those are often harder to figure out and the cost can add up quickly.
What are your best ideas? And what should we avoid giving?

I used to make my Lemon Tea Bread for the postman, and leave it in the mailbox for him with a nice card. He loved it!
Teachers are difficult, but I used to have several teachers as clients when I had my cleaning biz and they had lovely gifts from children. Some had candles, little ornaments with the child's photo inside, gift cards for Bath & Body Works, local restaurants, & bookstores. I always purchased something when my daughter was little, but I was not into crafting then and mothers today are more savvy when it comes to saving money. If I were a young mother today I would definitely make salt dough ornaments, or the baked cinnamon/applesauce ornaments. I saw both recipes online. If you know how to crochet or sew there are many things you can make that are quick and useful. Aprons, dishcloths, sachets, pressed flower booklets, bookmarks, clay pots painted with a design and throw in some gardening gloves and a few packs of seeds, recipes in a jar complete with a wooden spoon and tied up with raffia and the recipe printed on a label. You can do up some baskets by placing wadded newsprint in the bottom of the basket, place your filler on top of this, add some assorted teas & cookies and maybe a nice mug, put some cellophane wrap on it and tie a raffia bow at the top. You can get the raffia, cellaphane wrap and baskets at wholesale outlets for not too much money. Sometimes they have good sales. I think the tea basket gift would be nice for men or women teachers. Men are a little more difficult to buy for, but what guy does not like homemade fudge, chocolate chip cookies, or Lemon Tea Bread? These items can be made in advance and frozen, except for the fudge. Remember, moms are extremely busy around holiday time and they need a break too. Get the kids to help on some of the gifts, like the salt dough project. You'd be surprised how creative they are in the kitchen and you'll be spending quality time with them as well. One year I made gingerbread men out of brown grocery bags. Draw your GBM design and cut 2 for every GBM that you'll be making. Start gluing them back to back leaving one side open. Stuff some used dryer sheets in between the GBM layers, close it up, take your red colored marker and draw stitches around the outside edge, use a brown marker for the eyes, nose, and mouth, and red again for the buttons. These are cute and a keeper. Oh, and seasoned nuts are festive for gifting. All you do is melt some butter, add your fav seasonings, put the nuts in the bowl and stir/mix them until all are coated, place the nuts on a flat baking sheet in 350 oven for 15 minutes or less, let cool and place in tins that you can buy at Walmart for not much money. Tah dah! There you have it, Christmas all wrapped up.

Wow! You have some great ideas for gifts, Karlin.
I've been thinking that a mini flower pot snowman would be a good one too.
Several years ago, I did a cross stitch on a woven rug. It was an outdoor sisal type mat with squares and I used strips of fabric to stitch. Due to the size of the rug, I could do only a simple design, such as a Christmas tree but it was really cute and much appreciated. I added a fabric loop at the top for hanging. Simple, fast but cute. I wish I had kept one for myself!

Yes. This year I made pom pom dolls for our granddaughters and pom pom dogs for our grandsons. It used up a lot of fabric scraps that were not really useful for other projects. I used a large dinner plate for the 14 body pom poms; a slightly smaller dinner plate for the legs and a cereal bowl for the arms. Each pom pom has leftover fleece or polyester quilt bat inside it.
I also made 20 bowls out of used Christmas cards. Each bowl takes about 13 cards. About three years ago, I saw these paper bowls in a boutique. They were holding small ornaments. I had remembered making them in school in the 1950s but believe they were a craft from the depression era. I found a very damaged sample in an antique store and cut if up for the pattern. Basically they are 6 equal angled sided pieces with a flat bottom and curved top. Cut 12. Sew two together back to back with a blanket stitch (embroidery thread). If you go around the edge with your standard sewing machine set on its widest stitch (sans thread), you will have nice spacing for your blanket stitching. (Or they can be crocheted around the edge if you prefer to crochet). Once the 6 sides are made, use embroidery thread to attach them together. Then add the bowl bottom which also has been blanket stitched.
Now I am looking for button crafting ideas for next year. There are quite a few ideas on the Internet; but most of them are not very appealing to me. So would certainly like to hear from people who have been successful in creating something with buttons that someone might really want.

Oh, forgot to add that I am going to put chips in a plastic gallon zip lock bag and dip mix in the bowls - or cookies

One year I purchased a pattern for a clothespin bag that looked like a little girl's dress. I used up fabric scraps and made well over twenty of these for neighbors and my children. I used vintage 1930s era fabric. The "clothespin bags" were a huge success! One daughter used hers as a holder for dispostable diapers in her daughter's 1950s era decorated nursery. Another daughter uses her to store plastic sacks. Another daughter uses her for decoration in her laundry room and it holds clothespins. Another uses hers to hold hosiery.

Hi ljlm2! Glad to see you on our crafts boards.
I'm impressed with all of your gift creations. Do you have any pictures? I'd love to actually see them.
I've never tried to make anything from buttons but will keep my eyes open for ideas.
Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Hi ljlm2. Is this the bowl that you made. You will need to scroll down when you click on this site. I made these before and people really loved them. BTW, welcome to the forum. Karlin Ann

Hi again, ljlm2. Have you looked at www.marthastewart.com for the button crafts? There are 15 pages. Maybe you can find something or get an idea from these. I love the napkin rings, bracelets, and lampshade covers. Also, the pillow covers. Too pretty!

I make gifts at times when it inspires me. For one year I made all the grandmothers in my family ornaments with gold leaf letters of their grandchildren names. This year I made a 4x6 photo album with grandchildren pictures in it with empty pages to add future pics as the children grow up or if there are new additions arrive than they can add those in their books as well.
